HARIO V60
The V60 is a popular, fun method to make delicious coffee!
Its pour-over method is celebrated for its ability to highlight the unique flavors of coffee beans, and James Hoffmann’s "Ultimate V60 Technique" refines this process to deliver consistently great cups. Here's a step-by-step guide based on his approach:
What You'll Need:
- V60 dripper
- Filter paper
- Freshly ground coffee. We recommend our Special Edition version for this method. Ratio of 60 g of coffee to 1 liter of water.
- Kettle (preferably with a gooseneck spout)
- Scale
- Timer
Step-by-Step Process:
Prepare Your Equipment:
Place the V60 dripper over your mug or server. Insert the filter paper and rinse it with hot water. This preheats the equipment and removes any paper taste from the filter.
Measure Coffee and Water:
Use a ratio of 15 g of coffee to 250 g of water. Adjust based on your preferred strength.
Pre-wet the Coffee Grounds (Bloom):
Pour 50 g of water at around 94° C (201° F) over the grounds, just enough to saturate them. Allow the coffee to bloom for 30-45 seconds. This releases trapped gases and prepares the coffee for even extraction.
Controlled Pouring:
Begin pouring the rest of the water in small, circular motions, avoiding the filter's edges. Hoffmann emphasizes pouring in stages to ensure a consistent flow rate. Pour up to 100 g, wait for the water to draw down, then continue pouring in intervals of 100 g until you reach 250 g.
Maintain Consistency:
Use a scale to keep track of the water added and a timer to maintain precise intervals. Hoffmann suggests consistent and controlled pours to avoid over-extraction and ensure an even brew.
Enjoy:
Once the water has fully drawn through, remove the dripper and enjoy your perfectly brewed cup of coffee.
This method ensures a balanced cup, enhancing the clarity and complexity of flavors. You can adjust variables like grind size and pouring speed with practice to match your taste preferences.
If you own one or are thinking of getting one, this method and the video have great insights on how to use it and, eventually, the base for creating your own technique. Enjoy!
